1939 ... The little girl is Elizabeth Snyder Duncan, a regular contributor to HazardKentucky.com and WSGS.com. Hazard has several new stores in 1939 - the Firestone Auto and Supply Company opened on High Street in the Taulbee Building and is managed by William Sousley, formerly of Lexington. The Western Auto Store opened at 210 Main Street a few months ago, owned by Walker Taylor and Ernest Evans. The Leader Store also opened in the old Perry County State Bank Building and is operated by Max Mazer. We also have the new Country Club in Hazard that opened last year. Zack White & his orchestra performed at the grand opening. Work is progressing on new homes in the Woodland Park section of Hazard. The six homes should be completed soon. L. O. Davis is in charge of the project. They are going to offer land to the public at an auction soon. I expect these lots will go quickly so you better be there before they're all gone.

I cannot place her, but she is cute.
ReplyDeleteShe looks familiar but I can't quite place her. Can you give us a hint?
ReplyDeleteCould this be Elizabeth Snyder Duncan?
ReplyDeleteHere I am, six years old, witnessing my first big flood, the angry flood of 1939. Under its muddy waters is East Main Street, people climbing the hillside behind our house, some stopping to sit on our big porch overlooking it all. I was amazed but soon was put to bed and as I lay all snuggled in granny's featherbed, smoke from the old folks pipes bellowed though my window, but soon I was in "dreamland".
ReplyDeleteI was 4 in l939 without a care in the world. I still remember some things like Herman's store. I remember my playmates who were Pinky Cornett, Wilma Jean and Winfred Sizemore and Jay Allen Combs.
ReplyDeleteCool picture of Elizabeth Snyder Duncan. I hope Elizabeth post a comment about the picture on here. I would love to hear her thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesing blog of past history of Hazard. Thanks WSGS.
ReplyDeleteThank ou, Mr. Wanderer, for seleting this picture of me. You could hav dug into your files and found one of me in pigtails. How I hated wearing them! My mother would plait my hair and then tie a huge bow out of ribbon. This girl seems tohave a decent haircut. She is also wearing gold rimmed glasses, fashionable for that time, and a neat dress with a dress with ruffles on the collar and sleeves. Thanks again for the memories of an era long past.
