I shall never cease to marvel at Dalton’s Restaurant in Stanton, a small community along Kentucky 15 between here and Winchester. The food is excellent, the service by neatly dressed waitresses in their checked uniforms is prompt and efficient and the restaurant, a model in cleanliness. It is the type of restaurant you would expect to find in a large city such as Lexington or Louisville, but my first introduction to the restaurant was early this year, when my wife suggested we stop there enroot to Lexington. I, of course, had driven by the place countless times before. Since the first visit, “let’s stop at Dalton’s” has been a by-word in our family on every visit to the bluegrass for football or basketball games. Rare to the day that you won’t run into someone you know when you stop at Dalton’s for something to eat. I think it would be a safe guess to estimate that the restaurant catches 90 per cent of the travelers along Kentucky 15 between Hazard and Lexington. 1959

  1. If I had a dime for every time I counted the miles to get off the bus and go into Dalton's. Most kids say "are we there yet?" Me, I pondered "how many miles to Dalton's?" I would go to Cincinnati via Greyhound Bus. Dalton's was full of good food aroma and lots of happy people, smiles and I don't remember many frowns in those days,

  2. Dalton's Restaurant was a magnet for motorists traveling the winding KY. 15 in and out of the mountains. Dalton's food was great, their location was perfect and word of mouth was their best advertising. However that all changed when the Mountain Parkway opened in 1963. Instead of a four hour trip from Hazard to Lexington, it was a 2 hour trip. People now had the option of waiting to eat in Lexington since it was much closer and they weren't starving by the time they got to Stanton. Now to get to Dalton's you had to exit the parkway and drive a couple of blocks on the Stanton interchange. A landmark that was so familiar to East Kentucky drivers was soon gone.

    1. My Great Aunt and Uncle owned Daltons' Restaurant. My Grandma Sparks cooked there for many years as a widow and a retired School Teacher. My sister and I visited most every summer, where we were both given our own checkered dresses with white bleached ruffled aprons. I have so many fond memories of these times and the square dance we were able to attend out in a barn. Its so wonderful to see other folks remembering these good people. God Bless you!
